Based on Nathaniel Hawthorne's masterful allegory, The Scarlet Letter, remains as the classic psychological drama about the consequences of unbridled passion and love. The story, set in Puritan Boston, centers around convicted adulteress Hester Prynne who is mercifully spared the gallows but sentenced to wear the “scarlet letter” for her natural lifetime. Pressed by the political magistrates and clergy to name her paramour and give her child Pearl a father, “she refuses to speak,” thus setting in motion a macabre dance between guilty lover, the most holy Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale and learned, but vengeful husband returned from captivity, Roger Chillingsworth. The spiritual journey becomes a transformational tale of three lovers earmarked for damnation in the “Black Man's book” and struggling for the redemption and salvation of their souls. Today the The Scarlet Letter remains as one of the classics of American literature, pitting intellect against passion in a classic conflict of good and evil.
